Origins of the Term Lesbian
It is thought the term "lesbian" may be derived from the name of the Greek island of Lesbos. During the 6Th-century BCE, Lesbos was home to the poet Sappho. Sappho was put in control of a group of young beautiful women. She was to teach them their cultural edification. Sappo wrote about love for women and their beauty. By the 19th century, the word "Lesbian" referred to any derivative or aspect of Lesbos.

Alpha Lesbian
Often in a lesbian relationship you sometimes find there is a Alpha Lesbian. Even among a group of lesbian friends you often will find an alpha lesbian. Sometimes the other lesbians in the group will acknowledge the alpha lesbian. The alpha lesbian is in some ways the leader and trendsetter of the group. A lot of other lesbians are attracted to the alpha lesbian.

Blue Jean Femme Lesbian
A Blue Jean Femme Lesbian is a term that can be found within the lesbian culture. It refers to a Femme lesbian that is feminine in nature, as opposed to butch, but a femme that feels more comfortable in jeans or more casual clothing. Many within the lesbian community are opposed to these terms while others will embrace them. Many Blue Jean Femme Lesbians will often be happy in both jeans as well as a dress or skirt.

Butch Lesbian
A Butch Lesbian is a term used by some to identify a certain type of lesbian that has certain characteristics. The term is not used by everyone as some lesbians are opposed to the use of such terms. A butch lesbian is a female that is regarded as having as what some may call masculine characteristics. There are also different types of butch lesbian such as stone butch or soft butch. The lesbian community is very broad and being a butch lesbian is just part of that community. People sometimes make the mistake that they think butch lesbians want to be men, but this is false. Butch lesbians are women with real feelings, hopes and dreams in life. They can be your lover or your best friend in life.

Femme Lesbian
The term Femme Lesbian is often used to describe those lesbians that have feminine style. In some ways they are often viewed as the opposite of a butch lesbian. The use of the term Femme Lesbian and other such terms is also rejected by many within the lesbian community. They say why do lesbians need to be labeled this way. Yet other lesbians like to live the lifestyle that these terms apply. It is really a matter of your own personal choice in life. The terms Femme and Butch are often used to describe the identities of each partner in a lesbian relationship. Butch representing the traditionally male role and Femme the traditional female role. Over the years a number of sub femme terms have developed such as blue jean femme lesbian.

Gold Star Lesbian
A Gold Star Lesbian is a term within the lesbian community that is sometimes used to define a lesbian that has never had sex with a man. The gold star lesbian also has the intention of never having sex with a man in the future. The term is not often used and these sorts of terms are rejected by many within the lesbian community.

Hasbian
The term Hasbian refers to a woman who is a lesbian but is involved now in a relationship with a man or is married to a man. It should be noted that it does not mean the woman is no longer a lesbian or attracted to other women. But for a variety of reasons that may be family, cultural or political the woman is now involved with a man.

Kiki Lesbian
The term Kiki Lesbian goes back more then 50 years ago. At that time it was a common term but has since mostly dropped off with only a few still using the Kiki term. During the the 40`s to 70`s lesbians were mostly divided into Femme or Butch. The term Kiki applied to a lesbian that was neither Femme or Butch.

Lesbian Pillow Queen
A Lesbian Pillow Queen refers to a woman in a lesbian relationship that prefers or even demands to be on the receiving side of sexual contact. She prefers a sexual relationship where she is the only one getting pleasured. A lesbian pillow queen also does not like to give sexual pleasure in return. In fact they will usually refuse to do it. Often you will see a Pillow Queen involved in a relationship with a Stone Butch Lesbian. The two are suited together sexually.

Lesbian Boston Marriage
A Boston Marriage is a term that came about in New England during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The term refers to two women that lived together. These women received no financial support from men as they had their own source of income. In some cases these women were involved in what is now known as a lesbian relationship. As such some of those cases of women living together at that time have since became known as a Lesbian Boston Marriage.

Lipstick Lesbian
There is evidence the term Lipstick Lesbian may have been around since the 1970`s. Lipstick Lesbian started to become widely used during the 1990`s. The term Lipstick Lesbian is used by many within the lesbian community to describe those lesbians that have feminine characteristics. They wear skirts and dresses, and makeup and lipstick. These days there is also a Lipstick Lesbian Flag.

A Lesbian Pillow Queen refers to a woman in a lesbian relationship that prefers or even demands to be on the receiving side of sexual contact. A stone femme takes the role of the bottom in sexual encounters with another lesbian. In effect, they like to be pleased but do not wish to touch the genitals of their partner or perform oral sex. Usually a stone femme is attracted to a stone butch lesbian.

Stud Lesbian
The term Stud Lesbian refers to a lesbian that has a high degree of confidence. A stud lesbian is successful in their choice of jobs or study. Stud lesbians are also popular and have many friends and contacts. They live an active life and usually succeed at everything they do. A stud lesbian is sometimes called a dominant and often they are butch.

This was a term that was used around 1910 to 1950 to identify the group of Lesbian and bisexual film actresses in Hollywood. Due to social pressure at the that time in history these actresses had to keep their sexuality secret and so they often had double lives. These women sometimes married as a way of keeping their sexuality a secret.

Soft Butch Lesbian
A Soft Butch Lesbian is a term that is sometimes used within the lesbian community, though others in the lesbian community oppose such terms. A soft butch lesbian may be defined as a lesbian that is somewhere between a Femme and a Butch. Sometimes the soft butch lesbian will be more towards butch, but at other times more towards femme. A soft butch lesbian is regarded as having a more feminine inside but on the outside she may act and dress in a more masculine way. A soft butch lesbian generally appear androgynous. A soft butch lesbian is also sometimes called a stud-femme. Stem Lesbian A Stem Lesbian is a term that is used to define a lesbian that takes a role that is somewhere between a Femme and a Stud Lesbian. Sometimes the word Kiki is used to describe such a lesbian. The term Stem Lesbian is not often used and the use of such terms is rejected by many lesbians.
